Tome, Emerson is a distinct kind of a person. He was and still is areplica of what many would want to be, and that is the different. Heis not confusing, just different. He was (still is) different in themanner that he was not scared nor afraid of other people’s thoughtswhile trying to execute his main objective of bringing the otherpeople on the same level of thinking as his. I am not talking aboutpiercing every part of your body or even walking almost naked for thesociety to accept who you are (Packer, 2007). No. Emerson portrayedsomething deeper than this. For instance, in ‘Self-Reliance’, oneof his many pieces of work, Emerson is trying to tell people to stopconforming to the society’s norms and do something out of theordinary for the society to them just the way they are. In one of hiswritings, Emerson says, (and I quote) “what I must do is all thatconcerns me, not what the people think”. According to this quote,Emerson means that it is vital just as it is imperative for people tobe independent in what they believe in. Understand yourself beforeanyone else understands you. Emerson says, “To be great is to bemisunderstood.” He is not confusing here he is just brutallyhonest. Greatness comes with being real and truthful. According toEmerson, many will misunderstand you but those who will accept youand take what you as you are worth having around. Understand yourselffirst then, through their misunderstandings, and other people willsee your greatness. Most people think that Emerson is confusing, butto me, he is just different, and that’s what most of us would liketo be (Packer, 2007).
