Theterm photosynthesis is used to refer to a process through whichplants, algae, and some bacteria collect the sunlight and convert itinto useful energy. Photosynthesis is quite a complex, but importantreaction because it facilitates the combination of sunlight, carbondioxide, and water to form oxygen and glucose (Yahya, 2016). In myview, photosynthesis is the most important process that determinesthe survival of all living things. The process of photosynthesisserves as the backbone of the entire food chain. Plants depend onphotosynthesis to process food in the form of glucose. Plants areable to utilize the glucose for their growth and development, andsupply the surplus to herbivores. The survival of the herbivores,which is determined by the existence of plants, ensures thatcarnivores have an adequate food supply. The chain goes back toplants since carnivores and other animals supply carbon dioxide toplants, which maintains the process of photosynthesis.

Apartfrom sustaining the food chain, there are four other attributes ofphotosynthesis that make it one of the most significant processesthat contribute towards making the world a better place. First, theprocess of photosynthesis reduces air pollution. By absorbing carbondioxide from the air and converting it to oxygen among otherproducts, the process minimizes the quantity of greenhouse gases thatare released into the atmosphere each year (Yahya, 2016). In theabsence of photosynthesis, carbon dioxide would accumulate in theatmosphere and make the issue of global warming worse.

Secondly,photosynthesis supplies all the oxygen that is needed by animals. Theprocess allows plants to take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen.It is estimated that terrestrial plants produce about 30 % of theoxygen available in the atmosphere, while algae produce the remaining70 % (Yahya, 2016). The respiratory system of all animals (includinghuman beings) is adapted to breathing in oxygen, which implies thattheir survival is dependent on the process of photosynthesis.

Third,photosynthesis facilitates the production of most of the productsthat contribute towards the quality of human life. Examples of theproducts that can be attributed to photosynthesis include wood andcotton. Glucose, which is an immediate product of the process ofphotosynthesis, is converted to more complex compounds (such ascellulose) that form wood and cotton (Yahya, 2016). Although cottonis not the only material used in the manufacture of clothing, it isthe most common raw material used in the production of fabric in theworld.

Fourth,photosynthesis can be considered as the source of more than 90 % ofthe energy used in all sectors of the economy in the modern world(Yahya, 2016). For example, fossil fuels are organic matter thatstarted discomposing under high pressure many years ago. Theseorganic materials (including plants) were products of photosynthesis.This implies that photosynthesis drives the world economy indirectly.

Inconclusion, photosynthesis is the most critical natural process thatdetermines the survival of all living things. The process ofphotosynthesis facilitates the survival of the living things bysupplying them with energy, oxygen, and controlling air pollution. Inaddition, photosynthesis improves the quality of human life byplaying a critical role in the production of important products (suchas cotton and wood) that people use on a daily basis. Therefore, itis surprising to see human beings destroy forests and other forms ofvegetation that serve as agents of photosynthesis to facilitate humansurvival.
